Led by students, Iowans of all backgrounds will march together on Saturday at the state capitol and at locations across the state for an end to the epidemic of gun violence in our country. The March for Our Lives in Des Moines is being coordinated by Progress Iowa, Interfaith Alliance of Iowa, and a planning committee of student and community leaders. The Des Moines march is being held in solidarity with marches taking place across the state of Iowa, and at more than 800 locations worldwide.

“It was never a question for me whether I would get involved in this movement,” said Isabella O’Connor, a senior at Roosevelt High School involved with the planning of Saturday’s march. “These mass shootings could have happened at any school. The victims could have been my best friend, my sister, or even me. And the teenagers it did happen to don’t just want thoughts and prayer, they want effective gun control. They want to be heard by their representatives. They want action, and unfortunately, they’re not getting it. Maybe it’s because we don’t have millions of dollars to fund political campaigns or maybe it’s because they’re young. But as a fellow high school student, who was fortunate to not have this happen at my school, I’m compelled to do something to prove that my generation is here to take action where others have failed to do so.”
“So many mass shootings have occurred during my lifetime that Columbine no longer is even in the top ten deadliest,” said Addison Parrish, a 20 year old college student from Des Moines who has been part of the student-led planning committee. “I chose to join the fight for gun reform because I’m tired of mass murder becoming an everyday occurrence. I’m tired of politicians having no accountability for inaction. I want my little brother and sister to experience the innocence of childhood, free from constant fear. I chose to join the movement because I am tired of expecting change without putting in the work to make change happen.”
