Iowans joined a press call today following Wednesday’s vote in the House of Representatives to pass the Allred Resolution – which authorizes House Counsel to go to court and defend the ACA in the Texas, et. al. vs. United States, et. al. lawsuit.
Nearly every Republican – including Congressman Steve King – voted against the resolution.
“Approximately fifty percent of Iowans live with a pre=existing condition,” said Rep. Beth Wessel-Kroeschell. “If the Texas lawsuit isn’t overturned, all of those Iowans are at risk of losing their coverage.”
Robin Stone, a health care professional who lives with a pre-existing condition, added “Quite frankly I’m terrified about what might happen if the Affordable Care Act were overturned. Without the medicine and care I receive, my family would be stuck between whether I survive or a potential bankruptcy.”
“We want every Iowan to speak out and contact Senator Joni Ernst,” said Matt Sinovic, executive director of Progress Iowa. “In her leadership role Ernst has the ability to stand up to the President and represent the best interest of Iowans who are in need of protections for having a pre-existing condition. We need Joni Ernst to do her job and represent her constituents.”
The vote followed a new poll from Public Policy Polling (PPP) for Protect Our Care released earlier this week showing that more than half of voters oppose the recent court decision striking down the Affordable Care Act and sixty-nine percent of voters say it’s a major concern to them that the court case would eliminate protections for pre-existing conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, and asthma.
