Iowans are less free, less safe today

Progress Iowa Executive Director Matt Sinovic issued the following statement in response to the Iowa Supreme Court ruling that the 6-week abortion ban enacted by Governor Reynolds and the Republican legislature can take effect while the case is decided by the district court:

“Iowans are less free and less safe today. A doctor’s office is no longer a safe place to make critically important medical decisions. Governor Reynolds and Republican politicians will be peering in, approving what can or can’t be done to protect a patient.

“Our freedom and the rule of law should put Iowans rights and safety first, not the cruel political agenda of the MAGA Republican Governor and politicians. They passed this law to rip away our rights. When the courts rejected it, they passed it again, knowing the Governor’s hand-picked majority on the Iowa Supreme Court would do what she sent them to do. Now Iowa families will pay the price because of the Governor and legislature’s politics.”

“The vast majority of Iowans support access to abortion and reproductive care. We are the majority. And we hope everyone in our state who values their freedom will speak out to secure the right of every Iowan to be in charge of their bodies.”

Access to abortion and reproductive health care is essential. If you or someone you know is in need of care, please consider these resources:
