Progress Iowa Executive Director Matt Sinovic issued the following statement recognizing this Sunday’s 50th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, less than a year after the United States Supreme Court overturned that landmark abortion rights case in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health:

“Last year’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade put Iowans in a precarious position. It is still safe and legal to access abortion in Iowa. Unfortunately, we know Governor Reynolds and the Republican-led Legislature are a threat to our reproductive rights. Options for reproductive care and abortion are limited in Iowa because of the significant budget cuts they have made. And the threat of a constitutional amendment banning abortion in Iowa looms on the horizon.

“The majority of Iowans know limiting or criminalizing abortion lacks common sense. We need elected officials who respect the will of the people and will make reproductive freedom the law of the land. And we encourage every Iowan to use their voice and tell their story about the need for reproductive health care and abortion access.”

In advance of the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Progress Iowa published Roe 2023: Our Fight Continues, a messaging toolkit for Iowans who want to speak out in favor of reproductive freedom and access to abortion.
