Progress Iowa Executive Director Matt Sinovic issued the following statement in response to a shooting near East High School in Des Moines, that left one teen dead and two more hospitalized in critical condition:

“Sometimes words fail you, because they just aren’t enough. As a parent who drops his boys off at daycare and school, I cannot imagine the gut wrenching tragedy of finding out they wouldn’t be coming home. My heart is with everyone impacted by today’s devastating shooting outside East High School, especially the families whose dinner tables will be missing a child tonight.

“This kind of violent incident has unfortunately become more and more common. But we cannot let it become the norm. Firearm homicides have been on the rise here in Iowa since 2019. It’s time our lawmakers work together to strengthen our state’s gun laws and prevent future tragedies

“When words aren’t enough, we have to act. In the coming days, I hope our elected officials will  take immediate action to keep our kids and communities safe.”
