Progress Iowa Executive Director Matt Sinovic issued the following statement in response to Governor Kim Reynolds delivering the Republican response to President Biden’s State of the Union address:
“Iowans work hard every day and we are all doing our best to get by. And I’m sorry to say that tonight we were flat out embarrassed by our Governor.
“Corporate Kim Reynolds did her best to put America to sleep tonight as she read from her script. Unfortunately Iowans will wake up tomorrow in the nightmare she has created for families in our state. Her monotone address couldn’t even conceal the divisive issues she uses to pull us apart and distract us from the fact that she’s a corporate sellout who prioritizes her wealthy donors over hardworking families.
“During her speech, Corporate Kim Reynolds touted her unfair tax plan that rewards wealth, not work. Under her plan, Iowa’s highest earners will receive a massive tax cut, while potentially increasing taxes on the poorest in our state. The rich don’t need another Corporate Kim handout.
“Finally, Corporate Kim Reynolds highlighted her disastrous education policies that are hurting public schools. While Democrats want to invest $300 million in Iowa schools, Corporate Kim Reynolds wants to give it to her corporate donors and divert public education funds to private schools.
“And without surprise, Corporate Kim Reynolds failed to thank President Biden and Rep. Cindy Axne for helping pass the American Rescue Plan. Despite her public opposition to the bill, Reynolds had no problem taking credit for life-changing programs coming to our state, like a $210 million broadband expansion and $100 million water quality improvement project, that are funded by ARPA.
“Corporate Kim Reynolds might have tried to lull us into believing she has our best interests at heart, but our eyes are wide open to the nightmare she’s created for Iowans.”
