Virtual Corn Feed will take place Wednesday, September 2nd, free to attend, and feature U.S. Rep. Porter, former Missouri Secretary of State and Let America Vote founder Jason Kander, End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller, Iowa Rep. Ras Smith, and more

Progress Iowa announced today that Congresswoman and native Iowan Katie Porter (D-CA) will deliver the keynote address at the sixth annual Progress Iowa Corn Feed, to be held virtually on Wednesday, September 2nd.

Last year’s Progress Iowa Corn Feed featured a dozen Presidential candidates and was attended by more than 2,500 in Cedar Rapids. This year’s virtual Corn Feed will be accessible to more Iowans than ever before, as the event transitions to streaming through various online platforms.

“I am so excited to be joining Progress Iowa for their annual Corn Feed and to get a chance to speak with so many great Iowa progressives. This is a critical time for our country, and our party, and I could not think of a better time to come together and celebrate our progressive values” said Porter. “From California, where I live now, to Iowa, where I grew up, it is time to unite our grassroots activism and Progress Iowa’s grassroots event is a great way to get fired up to get to work for these last few months before the November election.”

“Congresswoman Porter is a badass fighter for every working family across this country and we’re thrilled she’ll be joining us,” said Matt Sinovic, executive director of Progress Iowa. “She has made congressional hearings more compelling than ever, with her tough questioning and fierce advocacy. And we can’t wait for the discussion about voting rights with our outstanding panel. Everyone who’s able to attend will leave feeling inspired to get to work and get out the vote.”

This year’s Progress Iowa Corn Feed will feature a live panel discussion about voting rights featuring former Missouri Secretary of State and Let America Vote Founder Jason Kander, End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller, facilitated by Iowa Representative Ras Smith. Attendees will also hear from Congresswoman Cindy Axne, Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer, Congressman Dave Loebsack, candidate for the U.S. Senate Theresa Greenfield, and congressional candidates Rita Hart and J.D. Scholten. Organizers expect additional speaker announcements soon. Attendees are asked to register online at ProgressIowaCornFeed.com In order to submit a question to the speakers, and to be the first to learn event updates.

“I’m looking forward to this panel to stress the importance of voting rights coming into the next election,” said Smith. “As we’ve seen with the voting rights battle recently in Iowa, we can’t take our rights for granted, and our right to vote is something we will always have to fight for.”

“Advocating to end voter suppression will be especially important at this year’s Progress Iowa Corn Feed,” said Kander. “We have a president and Republicans from D.C. to Des Moines who try to silence us, and so we need everyone to speak up with their ballot in November. The only way to do that is by working now to make it happen.”

“Our conversation comes at a critical time for our country, when we’ll all be grappling with the reality of voting in a completely new environment,” said Muller. “This pandemic has underscored the importance of having a government that is responsive to the needs of the people, not just special interests. We’re fortunate to have a group like Progress Iowa helping progressives empower one another to unrig the system and protect our democracy.  I’m excited to be part of that at this year’s Corn Feed.”

This year’s Progress Iowa Corn Feed will be available to watch online, and organizers expect a large audience as the event will be more accessible than ever before. As the Corn Feed will be two months before the general election, the event will highlight the importance of taking action before November.

Voter toolkits assembled by Raygun will provide information about getting out the vote and help Iowans give elected officials an “earful” and will also include a bag of “corn feed mix” popcorn from Almost Famous Popcorn. The voter toolkits are $25 each and will be available for purchase at the Progress Iowa Corn Feed website.

The Progress Iowa Corn Feed will be live-streamed at 5:30 p.m. central time on Wednesday, September 2nd, and will focus on bringing together Iowa’s progressive community from the comfort of everyone’s homes. Organizers are asking participants to RSVP to submit questions for speakers at www.ProgressIowaCornFeed.com
