AFP Lobbyist Attended HF291 Bill Signing Despite No Record Of Invitations Sent By Branstad/Reynolds Administration

As a result of an open records request, Progress Iowa has learned that the Office of Governor Branstad and Lt. Governor Reynolds kept no record of any invitation for the signing of HF291, the legislation that stripped away collective bargaining rights for more than 180,000 public employees in Iowa. A lobbyist for Americans for Prosperity Iowa (AFP), an organization funded by the Koch brothers, attended the signing despite there being no record of any invitation sent to anyone by the Branstad/Reynolds administration.

Taylor Co-Hosted Event With Koch-Backed Americans for Prosperity Iowa This Week

Progress Iowa today called on Representative Rob Taylor to recuse himself from any involvement in the ongoing complaint against the state director of Americans for Prosperity Iowa (AFP). The formal complaint against AFP was filed several weeks ago by the Iowa Federation of Labor, alleging that their state director failed to properly to register as a lobbyist until over a month into the legislative session. The AFP state director was very clearly lobbying legislators on behalf of the Koch Brothers-funded AFP, most notably on the collective bargaining bill, even attending the closed-door bill signing and posing for a photo with Governor Terry Branstad.

Governor Branstad signed HF291 in private ceremony without press or the general public invited 

Progress Iowa today submitted an open records request to Governor Branstad and Lt. Governor Reynolds, asking that they release the list of all those invited to attend the private bill signing of House File 291 (HF291) into law, as well as the list of those in attendance. During the past week, the private bill signing has been surrounded by controversy as no member of the media or the general public were invited, but at least one corporate lobbyist was in attendance.

Equal Pay Can’t Wait. Hardworking Women Deserve Better.

On #EqualPayDay 2016, Progress Iowa calls on lawmakers to make equal pay a priority and increase salary transparency in the workplace.

Hardworking women across Iowa and the entire country deserve equal pay for equal work. Wages have flatlined for nearly the last 40 years, with public policy stuck in a 1950s mentality, resulting in an entire generation of workers getting more productive without getting a raise. Stagnant wages are even more problematic for women, who earn 79 cents for every dollar a man makes in America (it’s even worse for African American women and Latinas). In Iowa, the gap is even wider, at 77 cents on the dollar for women. And it’s not just an issue for women; in almost 72% of Iowa families, women are the primary or co-breadwinner. When women aren’t paid fair wages, families suffer the consequences.
